Successful scientific sessions and workshops: updating professional knowledge to improve the quality of pediatric care

Over the past week, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital successfully organized a series of scientific sessions and workshops featuring two themes: “Updates on nutrition screening and nutritional interventions for pediatric patients” and “Peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC) in neonates and young children.”

The program contributed to strengthening the professional capacity of healthcare workers, keeping them up to date on advances in pediatrics, and ultimately improving the quality of treatment and comprehensive care for patients.

Delegates attended the scientific session on “Updates on nutrition screening and nutritional interventions for pediatric patients” both in person and online.

Twenty-five physicians from hospitals, including Hanoi Medical University Hospital, Hong Ngoc General Hospital, Phenikaa University Hospital, Hai Phong Children’s Hospital, and Hai Phong International Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, participated in the “PICC in neonates and young children” workshop at the Neonatal Care Center.

Clinical nutrition: a key factor in comprehensive pediatric care

On 26/05/2026, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital held a scientific session on “Updates on nutrition screening and nutritional interventions for pediatric patients.” The session was chaired by Dr. Phan Huu Phuc, Vice Director of the Hospital, and attracted many clinicians participating both in person and online.

The session was dynamic, with extensive professional exchange and experience sharing.

Nutrition plays an essential role in a child’s overall development and is also an effective supportive factor during treatment and recovery. At the session, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hang Nga from the Department of Nutrition at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital presented “Nutrition screening, assessment, and intervention at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital.” The presentation introduced the Hospital’s nutrition network model and the use of patient-management software to continuously monitor nutritional status throughout treatment. This helps clinicians detect malnutrition risk early and implement timely, effective interventions.

Next, Dr. Luu Thi My Thuc,  Head of the Department of Nutrition, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, presented: “Effectiveness of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in nutritional intervention and clinical practice guidance.” The presentation shared updated clinical nutrition practices and emphasized the value of individualized nutrition solutions (tailored diet plans for each child) and appropriate energy requirement calculations to improve growth, reduce complications, and enhance treatment outcomes.

PICC updates: an optimal solution for neonates and young children

Also on 26/05/2026, the workshop “PICC in neonates and young children” at the Neonatal Care Center focused on updating advances in peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC) techniques for neonates and young children. This technique plays an important role in intensive care and treatment of critically ill pediatric patients—especially preterm infants and children requiring prolonged intravenous access.

The workshop featured Dr. Distyayu Sukarja (Pondok Indah Hospital, Indonesia), who shared in-depth content, including:

  • Vascular access strategies in neonates—from anatomy to equipment optimization
  • PICC insertion techniques for preterm infants
  • Optimizing PICC effectiveness through line care and maintenance, and managing common complications

A hands-on practical session led by Dr. Distyayu Sukarja, together with clinicians from the Neonatal Care Center, provided valuable expertise and real-world experience. This helped medical staff update safe and effective technical procedures aligned with modern treatment trends.

Experts and participants received certificates at the program.
