Scientific session: “Latest updates in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric pneumonia and functional gastrointestinal disorders”

On 21/04/2026, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital held an in-person and online scientific session on the topic “Latest updates in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric pneumonia and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs).” The session provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals to update the most recent advances and share real-world experience in diagnosis and treatment—contributing to improved care quality for common pediatric conditions.

The session was chaired by Dr. Phan Huu Phuc, MD, PhD, Deputy Director of Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, and featured in-depth, academically valuable content.

Key updates shared during the session

The program focused on current best practices for diagnosing and treating pediatric pneumonia and functional gastrointestinal disorders, with emphasis on:

  • Early recognition of atypical bacterial pneumonia, particularly Mycoplasma pneumoniae, using clinical assessment combined with specialized diagnostic testing.
  • A multifactorial, individualized approach to treating pediatric FGIDs, following Rome IV criteria—integrating medications, probiotics, and psychological/behavioral support.
  • Case-based presentations supporting better multidisciplinary coordination in pediatric care and treatment.

Featured presentations

Two highly practical presentations were delivered:

  • “Updated management of atypical bacterial pneumonia” – presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thi Hong Hanh, MD, PhD, Director of the Respiratory Center, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital.
  • “Updated diagnosis and treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders in children” – presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Viet Ha, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital.

In addition, an open discussion session enabled medical staff to exchange professional experience and discuss real clinical scenarios, helping strengthen comprehensive treatment effectiveness for children.
