On the morning of 09/06/2026, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital welcomed and worked with an expert delegation from the PEWS Program (Pediatric Early Warning Score system), which supports the care of children with cancer. The activity aimed to strengthen international collaboration, promote professional exchange, and update comprehensive care models for pediatric patients in general and pediatric oncology patients in particular.

Dr. Phan Huu Phuc, MD, Vice Director of Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, together with representatives of the Oncology Center, received and worked with the delegation.
Within the PEWS framework, experts from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital discussed with the Hospital Board of Directors and the team of physicians and nurses at the Oncology Center regarding:
- implementation of the Pediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) system, and
- training in pediatric emergency and intensive care capacity.
Following the meeting, the delegation visited the Oncology Center, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and the Department of Clinical Hematology to learn about organizational models, care pathways, and treatment processes for pediatric oncology patients at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital. This provided an opportunity for both sides to continue practical exchange, share experience, and propose specific solutions to enhance the quality of comprehensive patient care.
The experts also presented and discussed:
- PEWS scoring methods,
- addressing questions in difficult-to-assess cases,
- response mechanisms when early warning signs are detected, and
- approaches for implementing, sustaining, and further developing the program to improve the effectiveness of patient care.

Leaders and staff from the Department of Quality Management and the Nursing Office also participated.
In addition, both sides shared experience in intensive care and in managing pediatric oncology patients at high risk of deterioration, and explored opportunities for future cooperation in training and scientific research.

The visit and working sessions by experts from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (USA) further strengthened Vietnam National Children’s Hospital’s partnerships with international collaborators, while creating opportunities for the Hospital to access advanced, comprehensive care models, strengthen professional capacity, and improve treatment quality—toward the goal of increasing the survival rate of children with cancer to 60% by 2030 in Viet Nam.
