I. OVERVIEW

The Neonatal Care Center – Vietnam National Children’s Hospital is one of the leading centers in Viet Nam in neonatal care, guided by the motto: “For the future of Vietnamese newborns.”

Established in 1969, alongside the Hospital’s more than 50-year development journey, the Neonatal Care Center currently operates five departments with outstanding facilities and infrastructure, a team of leading experts and physicians, and continuous adoption of the latest treatment approaches worldwide. With high-quality services, the Center has become a trusted destination for the care of thousands of newborns in Viet Nam.

The Neonatal Care Center is the first clinical unit in the Hospital to achieve ISO 9001:2020 certification—a reputable quality management standard for healthcare services, recognized in more than 160 countries.

II. MODERN FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT – PROFESSIONAL SERVICES

The Neonatal Care Center is located in a dedicated building within the Hospital campus, with a total area of 6,719 m², comprising 5 floors and 5 departments specialized for neonatal care and treatment:

Capacity: 200 beds, including 65 intensive care beds and 40 ventilators.

The Center is equipped with modern systems that optimize diagnosis and treatment. The care environment is modern, professional, and supported by an optimal infection control system. A smart data management system enables online information sharing and connectivity, helping patients register and follow up on results more conveniently and minimizing waiting time.

Key equipment includes:

  • Whole-body therapeutic hypothermia system for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE)
  • Nitric oxide (NO) therapy system
  • PRISMAFLEX continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) system
  • Dräger high-frequency ventilator
  • Incubator system
  • Phototherapy system for neonatal jaundice

III. HIGHLY QUALIFIED AND PROFESSIONAL HEALTHCARE TEAM

The Center brings together leading physicians and healthcare experts in neonatology in Viet Nam, with strong expertise and extensive experience. The Center aims to become one of the leading neonatal centers in Viet Nam and the region in both clinical practice and scientific research, while meeting the highest international standards for quality management and patient safety.

The Center regularly conducts technical transfer and professional exchange programs with pediatric centers worldwide (including the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, Japan, and France) to enhance the professional capacity and technical skills of healthcare staff.

IV. ACHIEVEMENTS AND ADVANCED TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT

Each year, the Neonatal Care Center:

  • provides outpatient services for more than 15,000 infants, and
  • treats more than 4,000 newborns with complex conditions such as respiratory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, infections, congenital anomalies, prematurity, and low birth weight.

Neonatal mortality has decreased from over 12% (before 2015) to below 7%.

The Center has saved many extremely premature infants, down to 25 weeks’ gestational age, with the lowest successfully treated birth weight being 480 grams.

The Center continuously updates and develops advanced neonatal care techniques, including:

  • Therapeutic hypothermia for newborns with hypoxic brain injury (HIE)
  • Blood purification for metabolic disorders and severe infections
  • Treatment of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) with nitric oxide (NO)
  • Automated exchange transfusion for severe jaundice
  • Central parenteral nutrition for very low birth weight infants

In addition, the Center continues to professionalize neonatal support services to improve service quality and promote comprehensive development for infants, including:

  • Kangaroo Care Center
  • Human Milk Bank: aiming to provide sufficient and valuable breast milk for all newborns lacking access to breast milk
  • Long-term neurodevelopmental assessment and follow-up for neonates with complex conditions

V. CONTINUING EDUCATION – SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH – LONG-TERM AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Neonatal Care Center has a long-term direction and structured investment in education and research, working closely with the Training and Research Institute for Child Health to develop international-standard medical training models with a breakthrough impact in Viet Nam.

The Center serves as a practical training site for medical students and pediatric trainees at multiple levels (general pediatrics, residency, master’s programs, specialist training, PhD candidates, etc.) from major hospitals and medical universities nationwide.

The Center also leads technical transfer and clinical direction for satellite hospitals, supporting lower-level facilities to improve neonatal diagnosis, emergency and intensive care capacity, and neonatal care, with the goal of reducing neonatal mortality in Viet Nam.

Care and treatment for newborns with medical conditions

General health check-ups

  • Early detection and treatment of neonatal jaundice with phototherapy
  • Diagnosis and treatment of neonatal respiratory, gastrointestinal, and infectious diseases
  • Post-discharge follow-up, especially for premature infants, infants with exchange transfusion for jaundice, and infants with hypoxic brain injury
  • Screening and counseling for congenital, genetic, and rare diseases
