From July 14–18, 2025, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital (VNCH) had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation of faculty members and final-year medical students from Teikyo University, Japan, for an academic and clinical exchange program focused on pediatric infectious diseases.
The delegation was warmly received by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Dien, Director of VNCH, along with representatives from various departments and centers across the hospital.
In his welcome speech, Dr. Dien provided an overview of Vietnam’s dynamic transformation across sectors, including the healthcare system, where VNCH plays a leading national role. He highlighted the hospital’s commitment to providing high-quality care for thousands of pediatric patients each day, including highly complex and rare cases.
“This is a valuable opportunity for students from Teikyo University to gain practical exposure, update their clinical knowledge, and engage in professional exchanges. You will also have a chance to visit specialized departments such as the Stem Cell Center and the Tropical Diseases Center, which regularly manage rare cases uncommon in Japan,” shared Dr. Dien.
Representing Teikyo University, Professor Yusuke Yoshino, Director of the Asian Disease Control Research Center (ADC), expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome and praised the longstanding cooperation between the two institutions.
From the VNCH side, Dr. Tran Huu Dat, Vice Director of the Neonatal Care Center, extended his welcome to the delegation and hoped that the students would gain meaningful and practical experiences during their stay.
Teikyo University is among Japan’s leading institutions in medical education. Since 2018, VNCH and Teikyo University have maintained a robust partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), focusing on training, academic exchange, and scientific research to enhance medical workforce development and pediatric healthcare outcomes.
Each year, Teikyo University sends final-year medical students to VNCH for on-site clinical observation and training, or participates in online training programs hosted by the hospital. In return, the university also offers scholarship opportunities for VNCH doctors to pursue further study and research in Japan.
From July 14 to 16, the visiting students participated in hands-on observation and clinical learning across various hospital units, including the Emergency and Poison Control Department, Heart Center, Respiratory Center, Neonatal Care Center, Tropical Diseases Center, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), as well as the Pediatric and Surgical Intensive Care Units.
A highlight of the exchange was a scientific seminar held on July 16, focusing on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the diagnosis of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and pediatric tuberculosis. The session featured a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Kazuhiro Takahashi, Department of Pediatrics, Teikyo University, who introduced an AI-based research project applied in medical diagnostics.
The exchange week concluded on July 18, 2025, with a formal closing and certificate ceremony. Students reflected on the valuable real-world insights gained from observing rare and complex cases, as well as the dedication and expertise of VNCH’s physicians and specialists.
