Over 80 children with Cerebral Palsy Received Health Consultation at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital

On September 11th, 2024, Vietnam National Children’s Hospital (VNCH) welcomed Professor Tran Anh Ton from Monash University (Australia) and a team of experts. The team and doctors from the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Departments of VNCH provided medical consultations and advised on proper rehabilitation care for over 80 children with cerebral palsy from various provinces across the country.

Professor Tran Anh Ton and Monash University team have been collaborating with Vietnam National Children’s Hospital since November 2022. During the meeting, Dr. Phan Huu Phuc, Vice Director of Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, expressed his pleasure at the visit and appreciated the technical support provided by the experts over the past period. He noted that as the leading pediatric hospital under the Ministry of Health, VNCH not only provides medical care but also undertakes an important role in training and transferring skills to lower-level hospitals, making partnerships with leading hospitals and universities globally essential for improving the quality of child healthcare.

In this visit, Professor Tran Anh Ton expressed the desire to establish long-term cooperation between Monash University and Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, particularly in training, research, and the fields of orthopedics and rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy.

At the meeting, Dr. Hoang Hai Duc, Head of the Orthopedics Department at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital, discussed cerebral palsy patient, a condition caused by brain damage or developmental delay, which can occur before, during, or after birth. The disease has severe consequences for both patients and their families, leading to long-term disorders in motor skills, senses, speech, and behavior. Severe cases may result in complete paralysis. Treatment for children with cerebral palsy requires close cooperation between the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Departments. Dr. Hoang Hai Duc hopes for further cooperation in the future to enhance the quality of life for more children with cerebral palsy.

During this visit, the expert team worked with doctors from the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Departments at Vietnam National Children’s Hospital to provide medical consultations, advising on proper care and rehabilitation techniques for more than 80 children with cerebral palsy from various regions. The experts also transferred examination and care techniques for cerebral palsy to doctors and nurses. Through this program, the most advanced and effective techniques were applied in the specialized treatment of cerebral palsy, offering these children a brighter future.
