Boy nearly loses testicle due to football collision

Recently, doctors from the Department of Urology at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital have undertaken treatment for Nguyen Manh Tu, a 13-year-old boy who suffered testicular injury after colliding with a friend while playing football.

Family members of the child reported that while playing football with friends, Manh Tu was unexpectedly hit in the groin area. After the accident, he was rushed to the local hospital for emergency treatment and later transferred to the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital for further care.

MSc. Dr. Vu Xuan Hoan, from the Department of Urology at the Vietanam National Children’s Hospital, who performed the surgery, stated that the child arrived at the hospital with severe swelling, bruising, and hematoma in the left testicle. Ultrasound images showed that the left testicle was not receiving blood supply, there was blood pooling around, and no pulse signal was detected. Therefore, the doctors immediately decided to perform emergency surgery for the child.

“The surgical process revealed significant blood clotting, and hematoma in the left scrotum area, the inner side of the left testicle was ruptured halfway through the blood vessels. However, the surgical team noticed that the testicular tissue still had good blood supply, so they decided to perform a hematoma removal, blood vessel ligation, and preservation of the left testicle for the child. The surgery, which lasted for 1.5 hours, was successful. Currently, the child’s health is stable, the testicle swelling has subsided, and he has been discharged from the hospital,” said MSc. Dr. Vu Xuan Hoan.

According to MSc. Dr. Vu Xuan Hoan, playing sports helps children understand, learn various skills, and develop positive attitudes necessary for their personality development. However, any sport can lead to injuries, especially when children participate in combat sports.

In recent years, the Department of Urology at the Vietnam National Children’s Hospital has received and treated several children with testicular injuries caused by accidents, sports, or cycling accidents, including severe cases requiring testicular removal.

To protect children from sports injuries, doctors advise parents on the following:

  • Before allowing children to participate in any sport, they should be informed about the general rules of the game and how to ensure their safety as well as that of other players.
  • Children should be equipped with appropriately sized sports gear to ensure safety.
  • Parents should inspect the playing area to ensure that there are no holes or grooves that could cause children to trip and fall.
  • When participating in team sports, children should be supervised by qualified individuals.

Additionally, doctors also recommend that if a child unfortunately encounters a genital injury, the family should take the child to specialized pediatric medical facilities for examination, evaluation of the extent of the injury, and timely treatment.
